I am a big fan of all white flour sack towels in the kitchen. We use them instead of paper towels whenever possible which has been a particularly good thing in 2020 since paper towels were hard to find! The key is to get all white so you can just throw them in the was with some bleach and make them fresh again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of taking up space in my drawers, I bought this antique scale and I store my towels there. Underneath I keep a basket for dirty towels and when it gets full, like it is now, I take the basket to my laundry room wash them and bring em back to use over and over. Good for the planet and my pocket book!

My grandmother used to make these baked beans for all of our family gatherings. They were inexpensive, fed a lot of people, a crowd pleaser and easy to make. I loved them and would always go back for seconds.

Over the years I have tasted many different types of baked beans as they always show up at summer barbecues. I've never like anyone's recipe more than my grandmother's. I did however add one extra ingredient, ground beef. It adds such a nice flavor and texture to the beans.

For years I had a table in my entryway. It’s what everyone did when I was growing up and so I just repeated the tradition.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I always found myself trying to find the “perfect” knickknacks to put on the table. Which amounted to a bunch of landfill I didn’t care anything about which is contrary to how I design.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I try to make the spaces in my home, and the ones I design for clients, meaningful and useful. Not a compilation of crap that goes out of style in a couple of years and gets thrown out or donated, but actual pieces that are sentimental and meaningful and provide life value.

With that in mind I set out to recreate my entry area and it turned out great! I had @jjmullen build me things … of course … and it turned out amazing!

It took me years to figure out the best way to make ribs. I used the oven and they were too dry. I used the grill and they were too tough. I used my crockpot and they were too saucy, just sauce-covered indiscernible meat.

I grew up in Indiana. Brick was everywhere. In my mid 20s I moved to California and brick was nowhere to be found. When we built our house, I wanted to bring some of my Indiana upbringing back and chose to bring some of my hometown into my living room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love it for about two years, and then I didn’t. The room feels dark with dark reclaimed barn wood floors and wood ceilings. I pondered ripping off the brick and redoing it with slab or stone. But I couldn’t figure out which one I truly wanted and I wasn’t about to spend money on it until I was ready
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I knew brick painting was trendy, but painting brick was BLASPHEMY in my book to this girl from Indiana. Or at least it was until it wasn’t.
After thinking about it for two years, I finally decided I wanted to lighten up the room and if that meant painting my brick white, then that’s what I had to do. Blasphemy and all.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was so easy to do and it COMPLETELY changed the living room. The white made it feel more open and airy and less dated. I am crazy for the way it turned out!
